MediaScape | Build an interactive display
Who are MediaScape?
Mediascape design, supply, install and maintain integrated audio-visual systems throughout Central Scotland. Their expert and enthusiastic team supply a wide range of commercial off-the-shelf equipment as well as design and install custom-built displays.
The Business Need
Mediascape approached 4c Design to help Campbell & Co (the overall exhibition designers) with creating a custom display for an exhibition at the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh. Their idea was to make a life-size transparent shell of a human body onto which they could project images. The completed audio-visual display would illustrate 18thcentury? Surgical techniques demonstration
Our Activities and Deliverables
Our task was to design and supply the transparent human body shell to Mediascape. We identified vacuum casting as the most suitable manufacturing technique for the finished product and used our network of industry contacts to select the right manufacturer for the job. Initially we intended to use Computer Aided Design to draw and machine the former (mould) needed for the vacuum casting process. However, in the course of the project we changed our approach and made the final version of the former from a modified shop window mannequin. Once the shell was vacuum formed we brought it back to our workshop for finishing, painting and mounting on a board as requested by Mediascape. The Mediascape team also needed a 3D scan of the shell in order so that they could project the images accurately and we arranged for this to be done at the Advanced Forming Research Centre.
