The MAKLAB!

Posted on: September 2nd, 2012 by Nick Czemerys

Last Friday the 4c Design crew crammed into the fun bus and descended upon the city centre on an intrepid adventure… Destination – the MAKLAB!

Located just off Buchanan Street in The Lighthouse, MAKLAB is an open workshop that offers designers the chance to use the latest digital toys in a creative environment to help take their projects to the next level.  Catering for a large range of technical ‘know-how’ and abilities, the friendly MAKLAB team offer members the advice required to make best use of the equipment in addition to providing full training and technical support. They offer a facility the likes of which have never been seen previously in Glasgow and deliver an almost walk in, on the spot service to allow anyone to “Dream it, Design it, MAK’ it!”

The MAKLAB facilities

  • 3D Scanners and Printers
  • Laser Cutters
  • 3 Axis
  • CNC Milling and Routing
  • Digital Embroidery
  • Vinyl Cutting

On top of this they also provide a large array of different materials at trade prices and computing facilities to help get projects off the ground and into development ASAP. As far as 4c is concerned, the expression “kids in a candy shop” has never been so much of an understatement!

4c's school trip to the MAKLAB

How the local design community ever got by without a facility like this is a mystery and we at 4c are excited to see some of the innovative creations that come from it over the coming months.

In summary, the MAKLAB offers a fantastic facility and service that will reinforce the capabilities and effectiveness of Glaswegian designers, helping to develop the next generation of blue sky innovation and model making.  We at 4c are now proud members and see this space as a priceless resource which will be utilized to the upmost in order to expand and strengthen our fabrication and prototyping proficiencies.

We are constantly being asked for help and advice on the best approach to new product development. Many people are daunted by the costs, pressures and lack of knowledge in this area. We came across this guide from Product Design Hub that we would thoroughly recommend to anyone looking to get involved in product development, whether its your first time or if you’re a seasoned designer.

The following advice is essential to know before you begin:

1. Who will buy your product?

2. How many potential customers are there?

3. Who will you be competing with?

4. What will make your product the best choice?

5. Can your product idea be protected?

6. Which standards will your product need to meet?

7. How will your product be manufactured and sold?

8. How much will all this cost?

9. How will you pay for it?

10. Do you have a plan?

Here is a brief summary of the guide, but for the full guide please follow this link.

SolidWorks Filter Problems – 4c Tech Video

Posted on: July 29th, 2011 by John Ritchie

SolidWorks Filter Problems

Getting slightly carried away with my step into the 21st century, I have now created a vimeo video to accompany my blog post. Here I am explaing why SolidWorks sometimes prevents you from selecting faces, edges and points and how to overcome this. This is due to Filters. The issue here is you might have the filters turned on in the Solidworks tooolbar? I’ve created this short technical video to show you how you turn filters off and on in Solidworks, they are a useful feature but a real pain when you don’t realise you have them on and are trying to select an edge or a face!

Watch this space for further tips and tricks. I’m already working on the second draft of my 3 hour epic explaining the benefits of configurations.
