4c design was founded in 2002 by Robin Smith and Peter Inglis. We are based in Glasgow and employ a diverse mix of designers and engineers. All are what you might call 'T' shaped people – they have a deep understanding of their discipline and the breadth to be able to contribute to all aspects of design development. Our facilities include state-of the art CAD software and a well equipped workshop underneath the studio for model making and prototyping.
We are a closely-knit group and invest in time together outside office hours to improve teamwork. We encourage our team to refine their skills through continual training and teaching.
Robin founded 4c Design in 2002. In addition to his role as managing director, he is responsible for all 4c product development and licensing activity that has proven to be invaluable when supporting a client on strategic decision making at all stages of the product development cycle. The success of 4c Design to date can be attributed to Robin's commitment to engineering excellence.
Robin attained a First Class Masters Degree in Mechanical Engineering and Product Design from the Glasgow School of Art and University of Glasgow.
Currently the Design Director for 4c Design, William first graduated from the Glasgow School of Art with a BA (Hons) in Product Design. As a co-founder of Mitchell Design Engineers, he is used to working with a variety of clients in a variety of industries from medical devices to television props. His love for solving difficult problems, managing the design process while maintaining focus on aesthetics and functionality, has been instrumental in making 4c design one of Scotland's leading product design agencies.
Steve is product designer and senior project manager. He started out as an electronics engineer in the semiconductor fabrication industry developing robotic test equipment and human machine interface designs for clients such as IBM, Motorola and Hyundai. After retraining in product design, he worked as a design consultant with IDEO in London for 5 years on strategic innovation projects with Procter & Gamble, Eli Lilly, BBC, Prada, Egg and Vodafone. On relocating to Scotland he worked briefly with Scottish Enterprise administering innovation grants to small businesses and was a key team member developing a new national structure for innovation services.
He has been a visiting lecturer in design methodologies at the Glasgow School of Art, and works closely with the Lighthouse in Glasgow to design and deliver design master classes to school age children.
Steve holds a BEng(Hons) degree in Electronic Engineering and graduated from the Royal College of Art and Imperial College in 2000 with an MA(RCA) in industrial design engineering.
